ERS SAR Image
The city of Algiers is located on the north coast of the African continent. The satellite image depicts a sharp contrast between the northern part of Algeria which is relatively fertile, mountainous, and topographically fragmented and the vast expanse of the southern part dominated by the Sahara desert. Northern Algeria is dominated by the parallel ranges of the Atlas mountain system. There are two major non-navigable rivers: Ec-Chellif and Seybouse. Northern Algeria is in the temperate zone and enjoys a mild, Mediterranean climate. Its broken topography, however, provides sharp local contrasts in both prevailing temperatures and incidence of rainfall. Year-to-year variations in climatic conditions are also common. In the Tell, temperatures in summer average between 21 °C and 24 °C and in winter drop to 10 °C and 12 °C. Winters are not cold, but the humidity is high. A prominent feature of the climate in this region is the sirocco, a dusty, choking south wind blowing off the desert, sometimes at gale force.
