At the junction of the Blue and the White Nile, the most important rivers in Sudan, an urban metropolis has developed on the transition from the desert regions of the north to the steppes of the south. The agglomeration Khartoum consists of the capital Khartoum, located to the south-east of the estuary, of the traditional Omdurman, spreading to the west of the White Nile, and of the somewhat smaller industrial centre North Khartoum, situated to the north of the Blue Nile. Together with the surrounding area they form the province of Khartoum. It is estimated that roughly five million people are living in this area of 28,165 km ², that is approximately one sixth of the total Sudanese population. If Khartoum comes to grips with its problems regarding infrastructure, but also regarding politics (for example the reconciliation with the hostile southern part of the country), it still has the opportunity to become an increasingly important bridge between Black Africa, the Mediterranean region and the Middle East.
