Located at an altitude of about 1800m in a wide basin of the Kabul River, Kabul is the capital of Afghanistan. With around 3 million inhabitants (2005), Kabul is also the largest town and the economic centre of Afghanistan. The strategic position of Kabul has been important for centuries because of its vicinity to the Khyber Pass, the major route linking Afghanistan and Pakistan. Kabul played an important role already in the 16th century, when the Moghul conqueror Babur made it the capital of his empire. Now the population is dominated by Tajiks, and the city is still suffering from the consequences of conflicts during the 1980's and 90’s.
