The city of Dhaka, the capital and largest city of Bangla Desh, is located on a tributary of the Dhaleswari river, which in turn flows into the Ganges only 40km southeast of the city. Situated in the northeast of the densely populated Ganges river delta near the Bay of Bengal, the city lies within the monsoon climate zone - about 80% of the annual rainfall of 1854mm is concentrated between May and September, leading to heavy floods around Dhaka. The area around Dhaka is one of the most important rice- and jute-growing regions of the world - the basis for the food and textile industry located here. With a population of about 11.5 million (2005), Dhaka is one of the fastest growing conurbations in South Asia.
