The district of Srinagar is part of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. With a population of around 900,000 inhabitants (1991), the district is spread over an area of 2228kmē. The capital city of Srinagar, is located in the Kashmir valley 1730 metres above sea level, about 876 km north of Delhi. Hari Parbat, Srinagar's 'Takht-i-Sulaiman' hill, forms the backdrop to the city. The River Jhelum passes through the city, which is famous for its lakes with their charming houseboats. The biggest lake (Lake Dal) shrunk to half its previous size, from 22kmē to about 11kmē, in 50 years, and is a stark reminder of the deterioration of the Himalayan lake ecosystem.
