Kathmandu is situated at an altitude of 1350m in a high valley of the Himalayas. It is the capital city and with about 1.5 million inhabitants (2005), the largest town in Nepal. For many centuries Kathmandu was very difficult to reach and therefore isolated. The first road connecting Kathmandu with the south was built in the 1950’s. With their numerous temples and unique architecture, Kathmandu and its neighbouring towns of Bakhtapur and Patan have been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites.
