With a population of around 900,000 (2000), Islamabad is the capital of Pakistan, and is located in the northeast of the country. The decision to move the capital from Karachi to Islamabad (just 14km north of Rawalpindi) was made in 1958, and the new capital was planned from scratch as can be seen clearly in the square grid patterns (sectors) shown in the satellite images. Health was an important issue for the planning of the city, and this is reflected by the artificial lakes and the numerous green areas in Islamabad. It can be seen that city has grown significantly since the 1990’s.
