A new canal is being dug to create a new valley parallel to the old one, which includes 18 new cities and more than 100 industrial enterprises, besides mining, tourism, services and utilities. Water will be carried from Lake Nasser south of the High Dam to irrigate vast areas of desert, connecting a series of oases in order to establish integrated communities around them and provide a continuous source of water and therefore life. This would allow Egypt to settle a large number of people away from the Nile, something which has proved impossible up to now. The starting point of the canal is a huge pumping station lifting about 25 million cubic metres of water daily from 147 to 200 metres above sea level, at a plateau adjacent to Lake Nasser to re-route the canal by gravity into an open space lined with cement and isolators for a distance of 350 km, rising to 850 km in the final phase.
