The Annapurna (the name means "Goddess of the harvests") mountain massif forms part of the Himalayan ridge and is located in Nepal about 200km northwest of Kathmandu. At 8091m, its highest peak Annapurna I is the 10th highest summit in the world and was the first of the 14 mountains over eight thousand metres to be climbed (1950). The Annapurna Circuit, which starts from Pokhara in the south, surrounds the massif with its six major peaks. Part of the trek follows the Kali Gandaki valley, which separates the Annapurna from the Dhaulagiri massif in the west. This unique wealth of different habitats has been integrated into the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACA), which, with an area of 7629 kmē, is Nepal's largest nature protection zone.
