The Hindukush mountain range is the westernmost extension of the Himalayas and separates the Kabul and Helmand river basins in the south from the Amu Darja basin in the north. The Gilgit Mountains, which are shown in the landscape presented, are located in the north of Pakistan at the border between the Hindukush and the Karakoram, and flanked by the Nanga Parbat massif in the southeast. The Gilgit river is a tributary of the Indus river, which has its source in the Transhimalaya.
