The delta forms the end of the 3000km long course of the Indus river from the Transhimalaya to the Arabian Sea, a part of the Indian Ocean. Located southeast of Karachi, this large delta at the juncture of freshwater and seawater has been recognised as one of the world's most important ecological regions, and is home for the nearly blind Indus river dolphin. As a consequence of the monsoon, the water flow of the Indus river varies greatly with the seasons. The swamps and mangroves in the delta, which act as a buffer zone, are endangered by the impact of various types of human activity, such as water extraction for irrigation or dam projects.
