The Alps [ Deutsch Dansk Español Français Italiano Dutch Português ]

This large database is intended to stimulate students and teachers to look more closely at the fragile environment of the alpine landscape.

The imaged area extends from Marseille in the West to Vienna in the East, and from Munich in the North to Florence in the South. You can browse within the image and click somewhere, if you want to see more details. By further zooming, you will get an image displayed at a spatial resolution of 30 m: enough to distinguish large buildings and perfect to map most of the landcover, i.e. woods, crops, mountains, glaciers and other landscape features.

We hope that you feel so inspired that you will look for a town you know or a place which you plan to visit, or maybe that you will just wish to fly over the Alps yourself, recognising the mountains, lakes and towns that you will pass on the way.

You can also test your knowledge of the Alps by trying this quiz.

If you decide to carry out an exercise or project, please send your report back to us via e-mail once your work is completed. Your work will be put on-line together with your school's name.
