Volcanoes [ Deutsch Dansk Español Français Italiano Dutch Português ]

Volcanic activity, both past and present, is subject to continuous study and analysis in the search for improved land-use planning, so that hazards and risk areas are minimised.

Authorities often need data over volcanic areas not only to monitor eruptions, but also to produce maps and thematic diagrams predicting the potential risk to the surrounding area.

Remote sensing data can detect lithologic differences, vegetation changes and altimetric variations following volcanic events, as well as the extent and growth of urban centres in endangered areas.
