Europe From Space [ ]

| Would you like to see how Europe does look from space? Explore a satellite image catalogue covering the whole continent. Select the image of your home town and, with your school teachers' help, try to locate roads, rivers and other places with which you are familiar. You can also test your knowledge about the Alps in a quiz.

Cities [ ]
This is a database containing satellite images of the major cities in Europe. For each country the capital city, and sometimes other cities and towns, are shown. All images are derived from various satellites and sensors operating at optical, infrared and microwave wavelengths that can be displayed and downloaded. Students are invited to work with satellite data and portray their town (or a town of interest), compare maps and illustrated documents to the satellite images and to produce a short description or a report of their findings.

The Alps [ ]
| |
Discover the Alpine landscape from space! The entire arc of the Alps, from Marseille in the West, to Vienna in the East and from Munich in the North, to Florence in the South is visible in this satellite view. Teachers and students are invited to zoom in to it, find an area of interest and download an image file which has a spatial resolution of 30 m. An introduction to working with satellite images is provided in the form of a quiz including various subjects and exercises. Some explanatory text is also available. There are also ideas for setting up a mini project, e.g. how to produce a satellite map or collect material suitable for pre-fieldwork discussions.

Weather [ ]
This section provides information on Europe's weather. You can also
learn about interesting meteorological phenomena, extreme weather conditions and how satellites can help in tracing and forecasting them. Once you get inside the 'Meteosat-online' project, you can become a meteorologist yourself. You can observe the weather and send in your own observations to compare with a Meteosat image. To do so, you are given guidelines on how to generate a weather report, how to "read" clouds in the sky and on a satellite image and how to use this knowledge and make forecasts with the aid of weather maps.

Landscapes [ ]
A growing collection of case studies and exercises on this web site present the various landscapes of Europe (with descriptions, images and facts) to teachers and students. The use of space imagery is introduced and its application is demonstrated. Conflicts between the conservation of recreational areas and the development of cities or industrial zones are discussed. Accurate monitoring of natural habitats necessitates the use of frequently updated maps that may be derived from recent aerial or satellite images. With data integrated in a Geographical Information System (GIS) the inter-relationship between stakeholders can be visualised and studied.
